Spirulina is a blue-green spiral-shaped microalgae. It’s actually not plant-based but rather a form of a cyanobacteria. Like all cyanobacteria, spirulina obtains its energy through photosynthesis, consuming carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Spirulina is extremely nutrient-rich with up to 70% protein, lots of beta-carotene, iron, calcium, phosphorus, iodine, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant—in addition to being a significant source of prebiotic polysaccharides.
